Ruth Roman was born in Lynn, Massachusetts, the oldest of the three daughters of Lithuanian Jewish parents Mary Pauline (Gold) and Abraham Roman. The young woman was just a child when her father, who was employed as the carnival barker, passed away. Her mother had to take on jobs like waitressing, cleaning and washing. Ruth lived in the tenement area of poverty in Boston, Massachusetts, where she attended school. Her school was closed in two years in order to study acting. This was not an easy path to take. Although she got an opportunity in New York posing as a woman for a magazine but no theater jobs came her way. In New York, she was employed at a bar as a check-in girl before quitting and moving back to Boston. She made the ends meet by working with her ushering duties during the day while in the evening, she performed with the New England Repertory Company, her first regular acting gig. She also studied drama and later graduated from the Bishop-Lee Theatre School.
